Personal Note

I am very interested in applying computerized medical information management to improving patient care and have just finished supervising the deployment of an electronic medical record throughout our practice. I am also interested in music, photography, foreign travel and recreational mathematics.

Education and Training

After graduating with honors in mathematics from the University of Michigan in 1962, Dr. Samuels attended medical school at Western Reserve University now Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH, receiving the M.D. degree in 1966. He was an intern and resident in internal medicine at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in Cleveland, and, after a two-year tour of duty in the United States Army ended in 1970, he finished his residency in internal medicine at Duke University in Durham, NC.

He then completed a fellowship in gastroenterology at the University of Chicago Hospitals and Clinics in 1973. From there, Dr. Samuels began his practice in Memphis at Gastroenterology Associates. After 13 years, he and Dr. Davidson formed Consultants in Gastroenterology and, four years later, both joined Dr. McCloy and Wooten to open The Gastroenterology Center, which included the first free-standing outpatient endoscopy ambulatory surgery center in Memphis. In 1996, he was a co-founder of Gastroenterology Center of the MidSouth, now Gastro One, where he is the chief operating officer.

Dr. Samuels was certified in internal medicine in 1972 and recertified in 1980 by the American Board of Internal Medicine. Dr. Samuels was board certified in gastroenterology in 1973.
